Area of Focus: Education
Partnership agency: Nanyang Technological University
The People’s Republic of China (PRC) looks set to capture the world’s imagination
for a long time to come. It offers huge potential for a myriad
of businesses across all industries. The challenge is in finding
the right key to unlock its wealth.
Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which encapsulates the entrepreneurial spirit of its Chinese founders and forefathers, is continually building on its rich heritage. Today, it is renowned for its credentials and expertise in Chinese-related research and education.
With the PRC’s rising popularity came a corresponding flood of interest in NTU’s
Chinese programmes. In 2004, it set up a dedicated China Strategy Group (CSG)
with the aim “to promote NTU’s international education development in the PRC
by providing a robust platform, and creating a sustainable model for academic
and research excellence." Its vision is to be the centre of competence in the
University in all China-related educational activities. In time, it can grow
to assume a regional, as well as global, leadership role.
Unlocking the opportunities in the PRC requires the right match,
like how the NTU and Lien Foundation have come together to form
the Lien Chinese Enterprise Research Centre (Lien CERC). The
centre, which comes under the purview of NTU’s CSG, will facilitate the knowledge
generation cycle on the latest developments of Chinese enterprises
and provide a platform for the meeting of academic researchers and PRC business
communities, local institutions, businesses and other interested parties.
Objectives of Lien CERC
- To develop a systematic method of study for keeping up with the latest developments of Chinese enterprises in China
- To be a platform to relate the latest business trends and developments to local institutions, businesses and government bodies.
The first such organisation in Singapore and the region, the Lien CERC will provide an invaluable resource consisting of trends, potential and forecasts specific to the PRC, via a systematic method of observation, research and policy analysis. This will help potential investors and other stakeholders better understand the country, its developmental stage and strategy, as well as equip them with up-to-date information to make informed decisions.
The NTU-Lien Foundation partnership bridges academic research and practical applications, leveraging the University’s rich source of knowledge to fulfil a need in the business sector.
