NUS High School of Mathematics and Science won the inaugural Singapore Junior Water Prize with a water desalination device inspired by nature. The simple device, which resembles the jellyfish-like Portuguese man-of-war, will be Singapore's entry to the prestigious Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition in August.

Inaugural batch of Lien Fellows from China appointed

Four senior government officials from China have been selected as inaugural recipients of the prestigious Lien Ying Chow Legacy Fellowship, a joint initiative by the Lien Foundation and Nanyang Technological University. The fellowship is established to strengthen ties and promote trust between Singapore and China through intellectual, cultural and social exchange. The programme is targeted at high-profile senior government officials and established professionals and academics from Singapore and China who can make an impact on policy issues in their respective fields.

The Lien Foundation and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have established the Lien Challenge - a competition that encourages innovative environmental solutions for China. The Challenge will involve senior Chinese officials who have enrolled in NTU's highly-regarded Master of Science in Managerial Economics and Master of Public Adminstration programmes. They will compete to come up with the best solutions to deal with China's water and sanitation issues.

Needy pre-schoolers and their families from the Young Women Muslim Association's Early Childhood Education Centres get a boost from a new initiative by the Foundation to empower low income families. The inaugural LIFE (Low Income Families Empowerment) fund will provide financial aid to needy parents who stay committed to being employed and gaining parenting skills. The Foundation also help fund the refurbishment of Bukit Batok education centre that boasted the new addition of Singapore's first road safety park for pre-schoolers.

Asia now has a new centre to research and train professionals in the care for the dying. The Lien Centre for Palliative Care is a joint effort by the Lien Foundation, DUKE-NUS Graduate Medical School, National Cancer Centre and Singhealth. The Centre aims to be the thought leader for palliative care in Singapore and the region.
